That&#039;s the fact, and now comes the interesting part: why you&#039;ll find different figures depending on where you look, and what that number really means when you step on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why are there so many different figures?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you look up the area of Madrid, you&#039;ll get three different numbers, and all three could be correct. It depends on which part of Madrid you&#039;re measuring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The municipality of Madrid: 605.77 km\u00b2.<\/strong> The city proper, the one administered by the City Council. That&#039;s the answer almost everyone is looking for.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Community of Madrid: approximately 8,028 km\u00b2.<\/strong> The entire region, with its 179 municipalities. Thirteen times the size of the city.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The central area: about 40 km\u00b2.<\/strong> Madrid surrounded by the M-30, where practically everything a tourist visits is located.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And there&#039;s one more reason for confusion: the number <strong>It changed recently<\/strong>. For years, the figure 604.3 km\u00b2 was cited, and it still appears on many websites. In October 2025, the municipal boundary between Madrid and Rivas-Vaciamadrid was adjusted, and the official area became 605.77 km\u00b2. If you see 604 somewhere, it&#039;s not made up: it&#039;s outdated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does 605 km\u00b2 mean when you walk it?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A number like that doesn&#039;t mean much until you turn it into something you can imagine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Madrid measures approximately <strong>30 kilometers from north to south<\/strong>. Crossing it on foot from end to end, without stopping, is a real challenge. <strong>six hours<\/strong> At a normal pace. From east to west it&#039;s slightly less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that&#039;s the entire municipal area, which includes open fields, industrial parks and woodland. <strong>The historic center that a visitor can explore fits into just over two square kilometers.<\/strong> From Puerta del Sol to the Royal Palace is a fifteen-minute walk. The city of Paris is tiny; what people imagine as Paris is the metropolitan area.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Barcelona has an area of 101 km\u00b2.<\/strong> It fits inside Madrid six times.<\/li>\n<li><strong>New York has 778 km\u00b2.<\/strong> Yes, it is older, but less than one would expect.<\/li>\n<li><strong>London is 1,572 km\u00b2.<\/strong> Two and a half times Madrid, and that&#039;s where you really notice the difference.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Madrid is, by surface area, <strong>one of the largest municipalities in Spain<\/strong> and one of the largest capital cities in the European Union. The fact that it doesn&#039;t seem like it is due to how compact its city center is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much of Madrid is green<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A considerable part of those 605 km\u00b2 is not built-up city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Cottage<\/strong> She alone occupies some <strong>17 km\u00b2<\/strong>Five times the size of Central Park, and the largest urban park in Spain. <strong>Withdrawal<\/strong>, which seems immense when you cross it, is actually only 1.2 km\u00b2. But the entire historic center can be explored in a morning: from Puerta del Sol to the Royal Palace it&#039;s fifteen minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Madrid the largest city in Spain?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is by far the most populated. In terms of area, it is one of the largest, although some municipalities with a lot of rural territory and a small population are larger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What really matters about that number<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">605 km\u00b2 sounds like an unmanageable city, and yet Madrid is one of the European capitals best explored on foot.
